As students arrive back to school on January 6th, 2026, the hallways feel a bit hectic with students trying to remember their class schedules. Coming back from winter break is a weird feeling. Once we were sleeping in and forgetting what day it was, suddenly we are back in the hallways trying to figure out everything. It almost feels like our brains are still on vacation mode while our bodies are already in first period.
A couple days into the first week back, some students were still struggling with remembering schedules and where they placed their notebook. This responsibility was misplaced and needed time to settle in, just like taking care of a plant. When you start, it takes a while, but you fall into a steady and easy routine. When you break the routine, it can be hard since it takes time to rebuild it to reached the desired product. Aliza Asim from 6th grade stated: “I miss winter break where I could relax, and when the new quarter started, I forgot a lot of things and had no motivation.”

Little things like writing down homework, checking sycamore, and organizing our binder act as if we are watering the plant itself. It is an essential way to help the plant back up, and in this case, help us students fall back into the rhythm of school. Even something as simple as packing our bags the night before or reviewing our notes can make a big difference. It is like giving a plant sunlight after a long stretch of cloudy days.
If we do not start building this responsibility, our routines can get very messed up and we can end up failing. If we put in consistent effort, we will grow like a plant grows when it’s nurtured. Responsibility takes time to build, and one big burst of energy and effort will not help us, just like watering a plant once and expecting it to grow.
By the middle of the week, you could see the shift everywhere, students arriving to class on time, planners beginning to be filled up, and fewer people asking, “Wait, what is due today again?.” It was like a garden coming back to life again after winter. Everyone was adjusting to their own pace, but the progress was noticeable.

By the end of the week, most of us had settled back into our usual routines. Our “leaves” (our habits, our focus, and our effort) were growing again. Coming back from break reminded us that responsibility is not something we can magically have. It is something we build, nurture, and take care of. Just like plants, we flourish when we give ourselves the consistency to grow. As we move further into the semester, InshaAllah we continue watering the habits that help us succeed.
