With the second quarter just beginning, October says its goodbyes. November and December are fast approaching, with them comes the inevitable midterm exams. But there is a way for students to avoid the stress and studying associated with these tests: the Incentive Program. By maintaining high grades, good attendance, and positive behavior, students can earn exemption from certain exams at the end of each semester. It’s been three years since Brighter Horiozns Academy (BHA) last had the Incentive Program, and now it’s finally back. But what exactly does it entail, and how can you qualify for it? Note: these policies are subject to change throughout the school year, and may not be final.

The Incentive Program is BHA’s way of recognizing students who embody academic and Islamic brilliance. It encourages students to remain disciplined, organized and engaged throughout the semester. Both middle and high school students can qualify for exemption, though the requirements slightly differ between the two.
For middle schoolers, exemption applies to both midterm and final exams. For middle school students, in order to be eligible, students must maintain at least an 85% average in the subject and have no more than ten tardies and five absences, as well as not receive more than ten demerit points during the semester.
For high school students, the standards are higher. All high school students are required to take midterms but can be exempt from a final exam in a subject if they maintain a 90% average or above, have 8 or fewer tardies, no more than three absences, and no more than eight demerit points during the semester. These expectations promote consistency and diligence long before the exam season begins.

Exemptions are decided per subject, meaning your grade in one class doesn’t affect another. So, while you may be exempt from English, you may still have to take the Math exam if your grade or attendance doesn’t meet the mark.
However, even the most dedicated of students have a few exams they can’t escape. Regardless of grades, attendance, or behavior, all students are required to take the Arabic exam, the Quran exam, and the written essay portion of the English exam. These assessments reflect BHA’s emphasis on building Islamic character through the understanding of the Quran through mastery of the Arabic language, as well as fundamental writing skills.

Although earning an exemption is exciting and fulfilling reward, it comes with responsibility. Students who qualify must still participate in class, complete all assignments, and maintain academic integrity. Additionally, any form of cheating, dishonesty, or bullying will result in automatic disqualification from the program. Tardies and demerit points reset after the first semester, giving students a fair chance to start fresh. Lists of students with exemptions are shared with parents and students alike before exam week. And those who are exempt are marked Off Campus on exam day.
Ultimately, the Incentive program and exemptions are more than just a chance to skip an exam. It’s a reflection of students’ hard work, academic brilliance and Islamic character. It stands as a symbol of BHA’s goal to nurture high achieving, responsible Muslim leaders who excel. It’s a reminder to all diligent students that hard work pays off.
