Hello BHA Stars, and welcome to your monthly Horizon Highlights- a general recap of everything that has happened on campus this past month.January was a busy month at the Academy, giving students a fresh start to the new year, and a new outlook on their lives. A chance to start over, some might say, for many aspects of life. Students set resolutions, goals, and aspirations for the new year, ones that I hope continue further than a few months.
On Monday, January 6th, students and staff returned back to campus, ready for another year of life at the Academy. Motivation was tangible in the hallways, for teachers and students alike. However, unmotivated students had nothing to fear- the snow days were here! Campus was closed Thursday, January 9th, and Friday, January 10th, due to inclement weather. Everyone was ecstatic to see snow falling, piling up the ground (more on that in our “Snow Day’ article!) Semester 1 report cards were issued that Friday the tenth, but my guess is that students were too busy playing in the snow to notice. The next week, from the 13th to the 17th, the snow had melted, and the Islamic Book Fair took place, occuring in the area behind the auditorium. The book fair was a wonderful chance to purchase Ramadan and Eid decor and gifts, as there were items exciting for all ages. That Friday, January 17th, the Khateb Club hosted a bake sale during middle and high school lunch, bringing delicious snacks for students to enjoy.
The next Monday, January 20th, Was Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and, as always, a school holiday. This was a great chance for students to catch up on missing homework and assignments, take a break, and commemorate all that Dr. King did for the United State’s equality. The next week was filled with food sales for students to enjoy. Tuesday, January 21st, was the MIST bake sale, for students to have a special treat to celebrate returning to school. Wednesday the 22nd was the BEAM cookie sale for middle and high school lunch, a special sweet. And Thursday the 23rd was a NHS bake sale, to help the National Honors Society fund future projects. That Friday, the 24th to January, BHA hosted a Meet With the Head of School event at 8:30 AM, for parents to better get to know Dr. Samah and ask any questions they may have.
Next Monday, January 27th, was a financial literacy seminar for high school students hosted by Ms. Sofia during highschool lunch. That Tuesday, the 28th and Wednesday the 29th held a Brownie Ice Cream Sale and Nacho Sale, respectively. Nacho Sales are a BHA staple and students often see at least one a month, so they won’t miss out on the delicious treat. Finally, that Friday, January 31st, was the re enrollment deadline for students, so parents made sure to re enroll their students for the 25-26 school year here at BHA! Also on that day was History and English Shine Night, where 6-10th grade students presented their history projects in the gym. In the auditorium, an itinerary of events occurred, such as skits by 10th grade AP students, an “Are You Smarter Than an AP Student?” game show (in which the parents’ team won) and a storytelling session by freshman english short story competition winners. This event concluded the month with a wonderful finish to an extraordinarily exciting month. May Allah bring everyone happiness and joy in the next month, and see you at the end of February!
