While sitting on the sidelines in a big match, one may not feel like a big deal. However, being a bench player is a role that’s teeming with many opportunities of growth and development. Whether it be cheering on your teammates, or finally stepping into a match, a bench player plays an extremely big part, both in and out of the match.
Noureen Ali, a 9th grade varsity volleyball team player, sometimes watches her team play from the sidelines, and she perceives herself playing on the same level as them, with their firm intensity and unbreakable focus.
“It gives me a positive attitude that keeps me optimistic until my moment to play arrives,” said Ali.
Mouaaz Aly, 9th grade varsity soccer team player, views his team as full of exceptional talent and prominent passion, and he likes to incorporate some habits and skills from his teammates into his own play style. He also accepts criticism from his coaches and teammates while simultaneously trying to correct his mistakes.
“Feedback and criticism is just another way of people trying to help you, even if it does come out harsh. I always try to stay focused, and use what they’re telling me to better myself, as well as trying to play the best I can, while also fitting into the requirements of my coaches,” said Aly.
Being a bench player is a commonly undermined role in many sports. However, it’s evident that a bench player plays a big role in both the overall performance and chemistry of the team. Also, having enough bench players on a team allows for the substitution of fresh players into a game when needed, giving the team more energy to play. Being a bench player allows you to learn from more experienced teammates, and be prepared to step in when needed. So, when being on the sidelines, watching the match go on, be reminded of a bench player’s overall significance to the game, as well as to the team as a whole. That’s the role of a bench player.
