January 9th and 10th will go down as two of the most exciting days of the year for Brighter Horizons Academy students. For two rare and magical days, Dallas was covered in a blanket of snow, and school was canceled. The announcement, which many of us were anxiously waiting for, came the night before, filling group chats and homes with cheers and excitement. It was the first snow of the year, and for a city like Dallas where snow is a rare guest, it felt like a gift from the sky.

“The moment I saw the snow falling, I couldn’t stay inside,” said Nimra Mahmood, sophomore. “I grabbed my coat, ran outside, and started catching snowflakes on my hands.” The normally busy streets were quiet, transformed into peaceful white landscapes. The neighborhood was alive with the sound of laughter as students built snowmen, had snowball fights, and made snow angels. “I challenged my brother to a snowball fight, and let’s just say I won,” joked Aisha Kadiwala, a sophomore, who played in the snow with her little brother Zayd.

Parents joined in the fun too, sharing the excitement of this rare event. “It’s not often we get snow like this in Dallas,” said Dr. Naeen Khan, a father of three BHA students. “The kids were thrilled, and honestly, so was I. We spent the morning building a snowman, and it was a memory we’ll treasure forever.”

Ahmed Alhaddad, a second grader, stands proudly next to the snowman he made with his family.

For many, the snow wasn’t just fun; it was a reminder of Allah’s greatness. The Quran often reflects on nature as a sign of Allah’s mercy and power. “And We sent down from the sky pure water” (Surah Al-Furqan, 25:48). Snow, in its purity, is a beautiful reminder of Allah’s perfection. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) also mentioned snow in his supplications, saying, “O Allah, cleanse me of my sins as white snow is cleansed of dirt” (Bukhari, Muslim). These teachings add a deeper meaning to moments like these, reminding us of the blessings we often take for granted.

Of course, with the joy of snow comes the need to stay safe. The freezing temperatures reminded everyone to bundle up and be cautious. “I had so much fun, but my mom kept reminding me to wear gloves and not stay out too long,” said Ahmed Alhaddad, a second grader. Hot drinks, cozy blankets, and warm meals became the perfect way to end hours of outdoor fun.

Though the snow melted quickly, the joy it brought will stay with us for a long time. For two days, we got to pause, enjoy time with our families, and experience the beauty of Allah’s creation in a way that felt truly special. As we return to school, we can all agree that these snow days were a highlight of the year.
